Captain Marvel: Brie Larson wants ’special’ Carol Danvers ‘She’s taken it VERY seriously’
The Nick Fury actor will appear alongside Larson in her MCU debut, due in cinemas early next year.
In a June interview that has resurfaced on Twitter and Reddit, he recalled telling her to “just breathe” after feeling the pressure of playing such an iconic Marvel character.
“She’s taken this responsibility very seriously: ‘I’ve got to represent not just me, Brie as an actress, but every woman on the planet as a strong woman. This character means so much to the franchise!’” he told Vulture.
“And it’s like, ‘breathe. Just breathe. You are who you are and they hired you for a reason, so just do you.’”
He added: “She wants it to be a special film, she wants it to represent women, she wants it to be a film that has heart and depth.
“Brie grabs information from everywhere: Who was the first female pilot? What were her struggles?
“She wants to make sure all of that is embodied in the character to give it the justice of the woman’s struggle, to follow her from where she was to becoming this great force, because she’s the most powerful character in the Marvel universe.”
Filming has recently wrapped on Captain Marvel, and Larson has also shot key scenes for Avengers 4, which will be released shortly afterwards.
Captain Marvel has yet to be seen on-screen in the MCU, although she was referred to in the Avengers: Infinity War end credits.
As Thanos successfully collected all of the Infinity Stones and wiped out half of all humanity, Nick Fury took out a pager to send a mysterious transmission – and he himself turned to ash just as Captain Marvel’s sumbol appeared on the screen.
Larson recently joked about the moment on Twitter – replying to Leslie Jones’s shocked livetweeting by writing: “New # who dis?”
It’s also been spotted in a potential Easter egg that Cull Obsidian – a member of the Black Order – is wearing a cloth at one point that matches the design of the Captain Marvel logo.
We’ll have to wait a little longer to see if Cull links in to Captain Marvel’s on-screen story at all, or if this was just an Easter egg or even an outright coincidence.
Larson herself recently said of the role: “She’s so strong – she can move planets! So for me, it was like – ‘how far can I go with this strength?’
“I really think all the hype and anticipation will be worth it.”
Captain Marvel is out on March 8, 2019.
