Halloween reviews: Jamie Lee Curtis sequel is ‘a HORROR fan’s dream come true’
It’s the eleventh instalment in the horror franchise and Jamie Lee Curtis is back to face Michael Myers yet again.
However there’s a big difference here: Danny McBride’s script is disregarding all the sequels so that this one is a direct follow-up to the 1978 original of the same name, 40 years later.
Halloween screened at Toronto International Film Festival last night and the first reviews are in.
And at the time of writing the slasher flick has an impressive 100% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Here are some of the highlights:
Collider
We finally have a new Halloween movie that moves the franchise forward and respects its legacy.
Variety
Green has pulled off what he set out to do, tying up the mythology that Carpenter and company established, while delivering plenty of fresh suspense – and grisly-creative kills – for younger audiences…
Hollywood Reporter
Carpenter should be pleased, and so should genre buffs – for once, this is a pic their less geeky girl/boyfriends should enjoy.
Bloody Disgusting
All in all, Halloween is a worthy entry in the franchise…the core cast is good to great, as is the violence and the gore. Everything really clicks at the finale
Dread Central
Halloween pays loving and respectful homage … while making a very bold and decisive claim for its own existence. This is the real deal and it is every horror fan’s dream come true.
Nerdist
For all of the deep and fascinating semiotic analysis of this film, it’s also just a great Halloween movie.
Slashfilm
David Gordon Green’s Halloween is a love-letter to horror fans – a brutal, scary and sometimes funny sequel that gives the long-running franchise the respect and adoration it deserves.
NOW Toronto
Curtis – who, nearing 60, remains a formidable screen presence – bring some genuine tension to her scenes with Greer.
indieWire
The movie would be a harmless, discardable remix of standard horror notes if not for Curtis, who charges through the movie as if she never stopped running four decades back.
Cinemixtape
David Gordon Green’s “Halloween” may not be perfect, but it’s exactly the rough-and-tumble twenty-first century sequel that Carpenter’s film deserves.
Halloween is released in UK cinemas on October 19, 2018.
