Hereditary DVD release date: When is Hereditary out on DVD and Blu-ray?

Hereditary caused a stir at its Sundance Film Festival debut.

Currently, the horror flick holds an 89 per cent rating on reviews aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.

Critics’ consensus reads “Hereditary uses its classic setup as the framework for a harrowing, uncommonly unsettling horror film whose cold touch lingers long beyond the closing credits.”

For fans who missed the cinema screening, the movie is now heading to DVD and Blu-ray.

When is Hereditary out on Blu-ray and DVD?

Hereditary comes to Blu-ray and DVD on October 8, 2019 – just in time for Halloween, 2018.

The movie has been touted as this generation’s Exorcist.

The official plot description reads: “When Ellen, the matriarch of the Graham family, passes away, her daughter Annie (Toni Collette), her husband (Gabriel Byrne) and their two children begin to unravel cryptic and increasingly terrifying secrets about their ancestry.

“The more they discover, the more they find themselves trying to outrun the sinister fate they seem to have inherited.”

The studio also writes of debut writer-direct Ari Aster, saying he “unleashes a nightmare vision of a domestic breakdown that exhibits the craft and precision of a nascent auteur, transforming a familial tragedy into something ominous and deeply disquieting, and pushing the horror movie into chilling new terrain with its shattering portrait of heritage gone to hell.”

A home entertainment release wouldn’t be anything without a bonus feature – and Hereditary’s Blu-ray release has eight.

There is also a featurette entitled “Cursed: The True Nature of Hereditary.”

The trailer for Hereditary features startling imagery, like a swarm of ants, a headless pigeon and someone on fire.

They all happen in such quick succession it’s hard to tell how or when they occur, but even without context, they’re exceptionally frightening.

If you’re on the fence about purchasing the Hereditary DVD or Blu-ray edition, the reviews should sway you.

The AV Club called Hereditary: “pure emotional terrorism, gripping you with real horror, the unspeakable kind, and then imbuing the supernatural stuff with those feelings.”

Time Out wrote: “A harrowing story of an unthinkable family tragedy that veers into the realm of the supernatural, Hereditary takes its place as a new generation’s The Exorcist — for some, it will spin heads even more savagely.”

Hereditary has been given a 15 rating by The British Board of Film Classification ranks.

During an interview with Rolling Stone, Aster referred to the movie as “a tragedy that curdles into a nightmare.”

He took inspiration from classic horror movies like Rosemary’s Baby and Carrie for Hereditary.
