'Hit the RESET button!' Farage reveals the Brexit deal EU would 'bite UK's arm off' for

Theresa May is in Salzburg with her European counterparts, set to try to sell her controversial Chequers agreement.

Leading supporter and former Ukip leader Nigel Farage has called on the Prime Minister to “hit the reset button” with exit negotiations.

Mr Farage, who has joined the Leave Means Leave campaign, argued the European Union would “bite our arms off” for a Canada-style free trade agreement.

Speaking on BBC News, he said: Here is the bizarre thing, the British Prime Minister in her Florence speech made clear that she didn’t want a free trade deal.

“She wanted to keep us opted very closely to many of the European structures.

“We have spent four decades trying to opt out of various bits of the European Union, we vote to leave in a referendum. We now have a Prime Minister who wants to opt us back into parts of the .

“I honestly believe, if this Government, if Mrs May presses the reset button and says ‘right, we are actually leaving all the associated parts of the European Union, but we would like a Canada-style trade deal’. I think they would now bite our arms off.”

Mr Farage also noted a “change of mood” among European politicians with their attitude towards Brexit Britain.

said: “I was in Strasbourg last week, I met both Juncker and Barnier when I was there.

“I sense a change in mood. There will be toing and froing over the course of the next 8 weeks with these negotiations.

“But, what I detect very clearly is German industry particularly is putting massive pressure on the European Commission and indeed Mrs Merkel.

“They are saying, ‘there are six to eight weeks to go, for goodness sake, can we please have a tariff-free access to one of our most important marketplaces in the world’.

“The opportunity there for a Canada-plus style trade deal is better than it has been at any point since the Brexit negotiations.

“But my fear is the Prime Minister has boxed herself into a very bad position.”

The Prime Minister is in the Austrian city of Salzburg to discuss her controversial Brexit plan with colleagues in the EU.

The Chequers agreement has been criticised by pro-Brexit Conservative MPs who claim it does not deliver what the British people voted for.

On Tuesday evening the European Union’s chief Brexit negotiations claimed Brussels was ready to offer an “improved” proposal on the question of the Northern Ireland border, a sticking point in negotiations between the UK and EU.

Mrs May blasted EU plans for the Northern Ireland border as “totally unacceptable”.
