With his brooding looks and sleek performance as PS David Budd, the Home Secretary’s bodyguard, Richard Madden has been tipped to be in the running for the next James Bond.

The bookies have slashed the odds of Richard Madden taking up the role of 007.

His odds have been dropped to 16/1 by Ladbrokes following his turn in the BBC hit drama.

However he still remains behind huge stars like Tom Hiddleston (6/4), Idris Elba (4/1) and Tom Hardy (5/1).

Creator of the drama Jed Mercurio believes the square-jawed leading man is destined “for bigger things.”

He told the Radio Times: “He’s the genuine article, a real leading man. And I think this role has put him very much in the spotlight for bigger things.”

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “It’s been a busy few weeks for Richard Madden and having not even been in the betting, both punters and traders clearly think he’s got a chance of swapping Budd for Bond.”

Even Madden’s own father has joined the debate over whether his son should fill the boots of the world’s most famous spy.

Richard Sr said playing 007 is on his son’s wish list.

He said: “I’m quite sure he does want the that to be on his CV one day but he’s not making a song and dance about it.

“Whether it’s Bond or any big role, Richard has ideas about things he’d like to do.

“It’s probably best whatever his desires or thoughts are to keep it to himself.”

Regardless of the rumours over who will become the next James Bond, for now Daniel Craig will play the British spy for one last time.

The 50-year-old told US chat show host Stephen Colbert he would be reprising the role one more time after taking a break.

He said: “I think this is it. I just want to go out on a high note and I can’t wait.”

However the next Bond film – entitled Bond 25 – will be headed by a new director, following the shock departure of Danny Boyle.

Boyle cited “creative differences” for leaving the upcoming film, and he has been replaced by Cary Fukunaga who directed True Detective and Beasts of No Nation.

Filming will begin in March 2019 for a worldwide release date of February 14, 2020, just three months later than originally scheduled.
