Johnny Cash: Guess who’s been BANNED from using The Man in Black’s music?
The iconic guitarist may have died back in 2003, but his legacy still continues.
However in recent years his cover of Tom Petty’s I Won’t Back Down has been used as a theme tune for white supremacist radio show, Stormfront.
According to NME, Cash’s record label American Recordings and Universal Music Group (UMG) have banned the organisation from using the late star’s music.
The label sent a letter to Stormfront which said they had not “licensed, granted permission, or otherwise authorised” using the song for the online radio show.
Host and white nationalist Patrick Slattery responded: “We will not be able to use I Won‘t Back Down as theme music anymore, but I can guarantee you, we’re not backing down.”
Since the ruling the theme tune has been replaced with Confederate song, The South Will Rise Again.
Meanwhile Cash’s daughter Rosanne denounced a white supremacist who was spotted during the Charlottesville riot wearing a t-shirt of the Country music star.
Through Facebook, she wrote: “Johnny Cash was a man whose heart beat with the rhythm of love and social justice.”
She added: He championed the rights of Native Americans, protested the war in Vietnam, was a voice for the poor, the struggling and the disenfranchised, and an advocate for the rights of prisoners.
“He would be horrified at even a casual use of his name or image for an idea or a cause founded in persecution and hatred. The white supremacists and neo-Nazis who marched in Charlottesville are poison in our society.”
