Jurassic World 2 Fallen Kingdom: Jeff Goldblum’s role revealed – it’s only a cameo
The movie sequel has had middling reviews from critics, and was heavily criticised here by Express.co.uk.
But audience excitement is high for the new blockbuster – with one of the contributing factors being Goldblum’s return.
Beware, however: he does not have a full leading role, or even a substantial supporting one; despite his prominence on the promo trail.
Instead, his alias Ian Malcolm is only back for a brief cameo in the new Jurassic World.
It’s an important part, however – as director JA Bayona explained months ahead of the film’s release.
“He’s more like a cameo, he doesn’t have a major role in the action but it’s definitely a very meaningful one in terms of the story,” he told The Independent.
“He’s always somehow been the voice of the conscience in these movies, telling us where the red lines are. He plays that role in this film.
“For Colin [Trevorrow] and I, it was about finding connections with the old trilogy, that makes it very rich as we are expanding Jurassic World but also finding new connections with Jurassic Park.”
Some unsuspecting fans have been disappointed by the absence of Goldblum for the bulk of the movie’s action.
“jeff goldblum is in jurassic world for literally two of the (painstaking) 128 minutes and i feel betrayed,” joked one person.
“jeff goldblum stupidly oversold, the content used of him in the trailers is pretty much it,” said another.
It was announced last month that Goldblum has signed a record deal, and will release a jazz piano collection later in 2018.
The star has signed with Decca Records, whose head of A&R Tom Lewis said: “As far as I can tell, everyone loves Jeff Goldblum.
“It’s like a universal truth… He’s a fantastic jazz pianist, a great band leader and just about the loveliest man in the world.
“His love of jazz is infectious and whenever he plays he makes you feel very happy.”
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is out now.
