Mamma Mia 2 songs: This INCREDIBLE moment almost DIDN’T happen – ‘It wasn’t in the script'

Here We Go Again’s official album soundtrack is still at Number One in the UK midweek charts, and audiences are flocking back to cinemas for repeat screenings.

But one of the most show-stopping moments was not in the original script, and not finalised until six weeks into production.

That moment is the uplifting, glorious finale of Super Trouper.

Speaking to IndieWire, producer Judy Craymer said things were so last-minute that costume designers had to get to work on the outfits without even knowing what song they would be used for.

“It was always the question of, ‘what’s the finale?,’” she recalled.

“It wasn’t in the script that went out. [ABBA members] Bjorn and Benny said, ‘No, don’t repeat Dancing Queen.‘

“Okay, Dancing Queen, enough. We were like, ‘What song?’

“I knew that we needed a costume, so I said to Michele Clapton, our fabulous costume designer, ‘Whatever happens, start designing something now. It’s going to be spandex. It’s going to be platform boots. It’s our big nod to ABBA, but we don’t know what it is yet. But just get on with the design.’”

Eventually they settled on Super Trouper, which reunites every single character – in both young and old form – enabling Meryl Streep, Cher, Amanda Seyfried, Lily James and the whole ensemble to perform together.

Craymer described the showtune as “embracing everybody”, including the audience.

“The key to Mamma Mia is that the audience has to feel they’re part of it, and I think that’s the moment I hope they do.”

Also in the cast for the second film are new stars Jessica Keenan Wynn, Alexa Davies, Andy Garcia, Jeremy Irvine, Josh Dylan and Hugh Skinner.

Returning are Christine Baranski, Julie Walters, Dominic Cooper, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgard and Pierce Brosnan.
