Outrageous Harley Quinn stole the show in Suicide Squad.

The baseball bat-wielding criminal was expected to headline Suicide Squad 2. There were talks of a spin-off with Jared Leto’s Joker. There are also plans for the all-female villain team of Gotham City Sirens with Catwoman and Poson Ivy.

Robbie, however, has her own ideas.

She has just revealed how far ahead she is with her own plans to produce and star in the very adult and provocative Bird of Prey movie with screenriter Christina Hobson.

Robbie told Collider: “I pitched the idea of an R-rated girl gang film including Harley, because I was like, ‘Harley needs friends.’

“Harley loves interacting with people, so don’t ever make her do a standalone film. She’s got to be with other people, it should be a girl gang. I wasn’t seeing enough girl gangs on screen, especially in the action space. So that was always a big part of it.”

Fans will be pleased that the plans are for an R-rated movie, which means no minors can see it without an adult. Part of Harley’s appeal is her foul mouth, blatant sexuality and disregard for polite behaviour.

The idea of her with a girl gang is tantalising. Although Suicide Squad was not well-received by critics, Harley’s interactions with her team and everyone else were a high point.

Robbie seems to be steaming ahead with her own clear vision while Warner Bros adjust to the recent restructuring of its DC franchises.

The actress told Moviefone: “Over the course of the next few years, the studio was exploring other Harley Quinn spinoffs. But I was not a part of those versions, I was always focused on this one with Christina.”

Robbie added: “I know that they were exploring Gotham City Sirens with David Ayer, and I know they were exploring a Joker and Harley Quinn movie, and they were exploring doing I don’t know what else.

“I wasn’t a part of those. I was focusing on this. I kept presenting it to the studio until they felt it was at a point where they were ready to do it. And now we’re all in.”

The star has recently proven her ability to act and produce successful and acclaimed projects with I, Tonya. The prospect of her putting her own stamp on Harley Quinn is sure to please fans and critics alike.
