Mary Poppins Returns: Dick Van Dyke, 92, leaves fans in TEARS after trailer release

The first full-length peek at the sequel was debuted on Good Morning America this morning, with 92-year-old Dick Van Dyke returning to the cast.

He plays Mr Dawes Jr, the son of Mr Dawes Sr – whom he donned old-age make-up to play in the 1964 original.

Arthur Malet, who played Mr Dawes Jr in the first film, passed away in 2013.

Van Dyke appears at the end of the trailer, dancing in front of Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda.

“hello if you’re looking for the person who burst into tears upon seeing dick van dyke dancing, you’ve found her,” one person tweeted.

“Dick Van Dyke dancing for approximately 1.25 seconds brought me to happy tears,” said another. “This looks magical!”

A third posted: “why did i immediately start crying when i saw dick van dyke in this trailer………… I’M SO EXCITED.”

Wrote a fourth: “anyone else get a bit teary when dick van dyke popped up or just me ???? cannot wait for this.”

Mary Poppins Returns sees Emily Blunt take over from Julie Andrews as the titular nanny.

Julie Walters, Colin Firth, Emily Mortimer, Ben Whishaw and Dame Angela Lansbury also star, along with Meryl Streep as Topsy.

Rob Marshall said of Andrews’ absence: ”Julie was incredibly gracious, and we talked about it in a very general way but she made it clear right up front.

“She said, ‘This is Emily’s show, and I really want it to be Emily’s show. I don’t want it to be, oh, here comes that Mary Poppins.

“‘I don’t want that. I really want her to take this and run with it, because she will be brilliant.'”

The movie will very much be a musical, and will – like the original – boast some moments of animation crossed-over with live action.

Filming took place in early 2017 in the United Kingdom.

Mary Poppins Returns is out on December 21.
