Mary Queen of Scots movie trailer: Margot Robbie and Saoirse Ronan's historical epic WATCH
The first round of potential Oscar 2019 contenders is here in the form of this classic Tudor story.
Robbie and Ronan star as the rival royal cousins who ruled Scotland and England at the same time.
The 16th century drama’s first trailer has landed and looks a shoe-in for Academy Awards nominations for the pair come January.
In fact Ronan has been nominated three times, most recently for Lady Bird this year, while Robbie earned her first for Best Actress for I, Tonya then too.
The official synopsis reads: “Mary Queen of Scots explores the turbulent life of the charismatic Mary Stuart (Ronan).
“Queen of France at 16 and widowed at 18, Mary defies pressure to remarry. “Instead, she returns to her native Scotland to reclaim her rightful throne.
“But Scotland and England fall under the rule of the compelling Elizabeth I (Robbie).
“Each young Queen beholds her “sister” in fear and fascination.”
The film also starts David Tennant as John Knox and Jack Lowden as Lord Darnley, Mary’s second husband, while Guy Pearce is in a yet to be disclosed role.
Mary Queen of Scots is released in UK cinemas on January 18, 2019.
