Mission Impossible 6 Fallout: Tom Cruise reveals if Ethan Hunt will ever DIE
Six films and 22 years in and now Cruise is back as Ethan Hunt for Mission: Impossible – Fallout.
The 56-year-old’s latest outing is the best reviewed of the series and just had its biggest box office opening.
No doubt Cruise will keep playing the IMF agent for a few more films at least, but would he ever have the character die?
Cinema Blend posed the question to the actor and he was adamant he wouldn’t ever be open to such an idea.
Cruise said: “No, no. That will never happen. Never. Never.”
Nevertheless co-star Henry Cavill, who plays August Walker in Fallout, is more up for the idea.
He said: “There’s something to that. But, it would be so heartbreaking.
“I don’t know if that’s the right thing to do. It would definitely be a solid sendoff.”
Cavill added: “But there’s something about Ethan, that he’s earned a death in bed, as an old man.”
Meanwhile director Christopher McQuarrie agreed more with Cruise.
He said: “It’s interesting. I wouldn’t know how to do it. I wouldn’t know how to do it in a way that was satisfying. Really, what I think it all comes down to is that you can kill anybody.
“Any character can die, so long as they die for a reason. You give them a noble death, and I think that’s where you feel a sense of dissatisfaction, when a character dies. Was their death noble enough?”
But what about James Bond? Will Daniel Craig bow out in his final 007 outing next year?
Since 2006’s Casino Royale, his incarnation has pushed the boundaries of the franchise with its modern, gritty vibes.
And with a through narrative across his films, will 007 producers be bold enough to allow his Bond to die at the end?
After all, this is something that surprised many Wolverine fans when Hugh Jackman bowed out in Logan last year after playing the character across nine X-Men movies. Click here to read more.
