Mission Impossible Fallout ending: Two MI6 sequel plots and Ethan Hunt's 'endpoint'
Mission Impossible Fallout is blasting into cinemas worldwide.
Six movies in and the franchise is receiving the best reviews of its twenty year history.
Tom Cruise shows no signs of slowing down and fellow star Simon Pegg has reinforced how the leading man will continue to lead the franchise forward.
The director, Christopher McQuarrie, also revealed how he purposefully left one major Ethan Hunt plotline wide open for the sequel because it hasn’t “found its endpoint” yet.
McQuarrie has a long history with Cruise and revealed in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter that they are already looking forward to what comes next.
Fnas wondering if Rebecca Ferguson’s Ilsa will be back, can rest assured that she will bea major player in teh serirs and her relationship with Hunt was held ona back burner for a reason.
McQuarrie said: “The Ilsa story has to wait for the Julia story to be resolved… And by the end of the movie, I ended up feeling that I’m not ready for them to define what their relationship is.”
MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 6 END CREDITS: SHOULD AUDIENCES WAIT UNTIL THE END?
“I feel better with their relationship not quite yet having found its endpoint. I want to see more of Ilsa. And once their relationship is resolved, there’s no tension left.”
The director also revealed how scenes shot for Rogue Nation ended up being used for Fallout instead. He said: “When Lane says to Ethan, ‘Your mission should you choose to accept it… did you ever choose not to?’, that was a scene we cut out of Rogue Nation… And then, it came back to work in Fallout.”
Similarly, a huge, much darked storyine for MI6 was shelved and could open up a thrilling new angle for the next movie.
McQuarrie said: “I wrote a scene that took Ethan to a very dark place, and when I pitched it to Tom, he said, ‘Well, how about this?’ Tom took the scene even darker, and I was quite surprised.
“I said, ‘Do you really want to go there with Ethan?’ Tom replied, ‘If we’re going to go for it, let’s go for it.'”
The scene was not used but it sounds like it will be a brave new world after MI6, now that Hunt’s sense of right and wrong, consequences and failure have been exposed to huge doubt.
McQuarrie added for the future: “The boundaries of this character and the boundaries of this franchise are even more limitless than I thought.”
