Outlaw King TRAILER: Chris Pine's Robert the Bruce in Game of Thrones meets Braveheart
Netflix show no sign of stopping when it comes to their original movies.
And next up is Outlaw King, a biopic of Robert the Bruce, from Hell or High Water director David Mackenzie which looks likely to keep Game of Thrones fans happy while they wait for the final season.
Pine stars as the 14th century King of Scots, who led the first war of Scottish Independence against England.
Outlaw King debuted at Toronto International Film Festival on September 6 and is set for a limited cinema release on November 9, when it also hits Netflix.
The official synopsis reads: “The untold, true story of Robert The Bruce who transformed from defeated nobleman, to reluctant King, to outlaw hero over the course of an extraordinary year.
“Forced into battle in order to save his family, his people and his country from the oppressive English occupation of medieval Scotland, Robert seizes the Scottish crown and rallies a ragtag group of men to face off against the wrath of the world’s strongest army lead by the ferocious King Edward I and his volatile son, the Prince of Wales.”
Outlaw King also stars Aaron-Taylor Johnson as Lord James Douglas and Game of Thrones’ very own Stannis Baratheon – Stephen Dilliane – plays King Edward Longshanks, Hammer of the Scots.
The film picks up where Gibson’s 1995 movie ends with Robert sheltering in the home of a widow, played by Spartacus actress Anna Hutchison.
Mad Men’s Jared Harris and Pretty Little Liars actor Shane Coffey also feature.
But sources denied they are trying to steal the thunder from the Netflix film, which portrays Bruce in his fight against the English and the Catholic Church after Wallace’s execution, eventually leading the Scots in the Wars of Independence.
Outlaw King is out on Netflix and playing in select cinemas from November 9.
