Rupert Everett will BREAK your heart as Oscar Wilde in this EXCLUSIVE clip
“I would sooner have fifty unnatural vices than one unnatural virtue. It is unnatural virtue that makes the world, for those who suffer, such a premature Hell.”
Unfortunately for Wilde, he may have had a winning way with words but he was on the wrong side of the law in Victorian Britain. His lifelong struggle with his homosexuality led to prison and disgrace.
Everyone knows how this ended his playwriting and celebrity career but inspired the writing of De Profundis.
However, few realise the enormous pain it caused Wilde because it also meant his beloved wife Constance was distanced from him forever – and with her, too, his sons.
Everett’s poignant and beautiful new movie examines Wilde’s final years.
Even as he attempts to rebuild his life after release from Reading Gaol, he is torn between his love for his wife and children and the fatal pull of irresistible and destructive Bosie (Lord Alfred Douglas).
This exclusive clip reveals a devastating letter written by Wilde to his wife (played with great pathos by Emily Watson) and lays bare his eternal inner battle.
Everett’s powerful examination of a great but tragic life is called The Happy Prince after Wilde’s famous short story, which frames key scenes throughout the movie.
The film features Merlin star Colin Morgan as the beguiling and selfish Bosie, with Colin Firth as Wilde’s loyal friend Reggie Turner and Edwin Thomas as his literary agent, Robbie Ross.
The Happy Prince will be released in UK cinemas on June 15, 2018.
