Sonic The Hedgehog movie: Guess which Hollywood LEGEND has been 'cast as Dr Robotnik'?

According to reports, it’s Jim Carrey who could be stepping up to portray Dr Robotnik, aka Doctor Eggman, on the big screen.

Deadline claims the actor is “negotiating” to star in the Paramount movie alongside James Marsden and Tika Sumpter.

Jeff Fowler is set to direct the movie, from a script by Pat Casey and Josh Miller.

The film will, in line with the iconic videogames, see Sonic stopping a villainous plot to take over the world.

Jim Carrey hasn’t appeared in a blockbuster comedy for some time now.

His last film appearance was in detective drama Dark Crimes, although he had a supporting role in 2016’s The Bad Batch; as well as – of course – 2014’s Dumb and Dumber To.

On the small screen, he’s been working on Jim and Andy: The Great Beyond – a documentary film about Carrey.

The Sonic film was first announced back in June 2014, as a hybrid between live action and CGI.

It has a tentative release date of November 15, 2019; a window that will be swamped by the likes of James Bond, Wonder Woman, Star Wars and Jumanji.

News of Carrey’s involvement has had a mixed reaction online, with one person saying on Twitter: “With Jim Carrey being cast as Eggman in the Sonic movie I’ve given up hope it’ll be a great movie faithful to the source material and instead hope it’s as absurd as it can be.”

Another, meanwhile, wrote: “Jim Carrey will probably be the best actor in the Sonic Movie, casting him as Robotnik is such a great choice.

“Robotnik has always that crazy doctor and that coincides with some of my favorite performances with him as either the crazy hero or villain.”

The Sonic the Hedgehog movie is out on November 15, 2019.
