Star Wars 9 spoilers: Does THIS new theory prove Rey is a Kenobi?

Star Wars: The Last Jedi revealed, in the trippiest of ways, Rey’s parents are actually nobodies.

But despite this news, fans are still casting about for who they really could be.

And curious fans were bolstered by Star Wars Episode VIII’s director Rian Johnson who said Rey’s parentage was still open.

After all, the only person to confirm to Rey her parents were ‘nobodies’ was Kylo Ren – and to say he had his own agenda would be putting it mildly.

Does THIS new theory prove Rey is a Kenobi?

An unverified theory states Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi is set to cameo in Episode IX.

HOW THE STORMTROOPER BECAME STAR WARS ICON ‘MORE POPULAR THAN MICHELANGELO’S DAVID’

The theory should be taken with a huge pinch of salt, but if it proves correct it could have some serious implications for Episode IX and Rey.

Every character who would recognise Obi-Wan has died (Han and Luke) and, after the death of Carrie Fisher, it is not expected that Leia will be in the third of the contemporary trilogy.

So it’s hard to imagine that Obi-Wan would be recognised by the current generation of Star Wars Jedis.

The only sensical way for Obi-Wan to appear in Episode IX would be as a force ghost, the same way Yoda and the original Alec Guinness Kenobi did.

During The Force Awakens, Rey’s Force vision included dialogue from Obi-Wan – some of which was provided by McGregor – including the character saying “Rey, these are your first steps.”

STAR WARS NEWS: ARE STAR WARS SPIN-OFF MOVIES ON HOLD AFTER SOLO FLOP?

Star Wars VIII drew other parallels between Obi-Wan and Rey, notably the Jedi mind trick scene but also in costumes and accents.

If Obi-Wan doesn’t appear, it doesn’t negate the lineage possibility but it may not have the same emotional impact.

Not to mention Rey’s parents being nobodies hit the young Jedi exactly where it would hurt her most.

Some fans were less than pleased by Rey’s parentage reveal but it does fit her character.

SOLO: WAS SOLO ACTUALLY A FLOP? WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR THE STAR WARS FRANCHISE?

Of course, Rey being a relative of someone already known to the Star Wars franchise is a J.J. Abrams kind of move.

Abrams is directing Episode IX after Rian Johnson’s divisive take on Episode VIII, and fans are expecting plenty of easter-egg moments in Episode IX.

If Rey ends up being some descendant of Obi-Wan Kenobi’s family tree she could also still be the daughter of ‘nobodies’, preventing dissonance between the two movies.

There’s still a few years of speculation ahead for fans to come up with other equally believable and ludicrous theories.

Star Wars Episode IX is in cinemas Thursday, December 19, 2019.
