Star Wars 9 ‘working toward something’ with Kylo Ren: How will character’s story END?

Star Wars Episode 9 is currently in production ahead of its release in late 2019.

It will close the current trilogy, and also the entire nine-part Skywalker saga – meaning all of its key players are likely to have their stories wrapped up.

And with Kylo as the main antagonist, its safe to say his arc will probably be particularly explosive in the next film.

As ever, the stars are sworn to secrecy on what exactly the plot of the film will be – but Driver spoke briefly in a new interview about JJ Abrams building to a strong climax.

Asked by Vulture what’s “interesting” to him about Kylo, Driver admitted that even that question was too loaded for him to answer fully.

“That’s hard to say because we’re working toward something in particular with that character,” he said.

“I don’t want to give anything away.”

So what “something” exactly is Kylo building towards?

One obvious possibility is redemption: Rey (Daisy Ridley) tried to haul Kylo back from the Dark Side in 2017’s The Last Jedi, to no avail.

In fact, the angst-ridden bad guy ended things on a more driven note than ever, making any possible redemption a real uphill battle. Let’s not forget he killed his own father in Episode 7.

Still, that would make for a much more interesting climax than a standard path that sees him getting increasingly evil, then meeting his maker in a final showdown with the Resistance.

Ultimately we still have over a year to wait before we get any real answers.

Episode 9 – which is as-yet-untitled – will see Driver and Ridley reunited with the likes of John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Kelly Marie Tran, Domhnall Gleeson and Lupita Nyong’o.

Mark Hamill will also be reprising the role of Luke Skywalker, despite appearing to be killed off in the last movie.

Carrie Fisher’s Leia will be seen courtesy of unused footage she shot for The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi.

Star Wars 9 is out in December 2019.
