Star Wars Kenobi movie shock: Obi-Wan spin-off ‘WILL go ahead' – but there's a BIG catch

Last week it was claimed that Star Wars bosses at LucasFilm were putting plans for anthology tales on hold after Solo failed to deliver enormous numbers at the box office.

The company since appear to have played down such speculation, but today it was suggested that Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan would appear in Episode 9 instead of in his own movie.

That’s now been countered thanks to The Playlist, which suggests that the movie will be released on Disney’s upcoming subscription streaming services – and not in cinemas.

The report’s writer stresses that “I have no confirmation, so we’ll have to treat [it] as hard rumour”, but it’s an interesting idea to consider – and one that would certainly generate a lot of attention for the upcoming streaming platform.

Stephen Daldry was previously thought to be in charge of the movie, but it seems he departed the project much earlier in 2018 – way before the success of Solo was known.

Today The Sun ran a report claiming Obi-Wan will appear in Episode 9, with a source saying: “Ewan will secretly film for the next Star Wars movie.

“Disney have been mulling over a stand-alone film for Obi-Wan. There have been concerns about getting the story right.”

McGregor has always insisted he knows nothing about such plans.

He said back in January: “There’s a lot of talk, and I’d be happy to play him again, but I don’t know anything more than you do.”

He had also told Entertainment Weekly: “There’s no official offer, and I haven’t met them about it or anything.

“But I’ve always said that I’d be happy to do it if they wanted to do it. It would be a good segue between the last episode of the prequels and the new episodes.

“I think they’ve got films to make until the 2020s, so I don’t think it’s going to happen soon if it happens at all.”

As ever, nothing is confirmed by LucasFilm.

The only Star Wars movie with a release date is Episode 9; slated for December 20, 2019.
