Star Wars Last Jedi: Rey is NOT that strong – Did Disney listen? Can they 'fix' Episode 8?
It will take a lot to placate some Star Wars fans.
A substantial and very vocal section of the dedicated fandom has made it very clear how unhappy they are with may aspects of Episode 8.
Many of their issues centre on Rey.
How did a stroppy girl with no knowledge of the Force and absolutely no training resist Kylo Ren’s mind and then defeat him the first time she ever picked up a lightsaber?
It’s ludicrous and utterly undermines every part of five decades of Star Wars. And there was still worse to come.
The Last Jedi showed Luke unwilling to train Rey. So she is still, to be very clear, untrained.
Yet when she has a confrontation with the highly-trained Jedi master, also possibly the most powerful Jedi in history, she held her own and then seemd to defeat him and leave him fallen at her feet.
What the Force is going on?
Backlashing and boycotting Star Wars may take some comfort in a new canon attempt to right some of these wrongs.
STAR WARS BACKLASH: WILL KATHLEEN KENNEDT BE ‘GONE BY SEPTEMBER’?
Marvel’s new Last Jedi comic Issue #4 explains what really happened in the controversial secen on Ahch-To.
Gary Whitta’s new and official canon version of the fight shows that Luke actually slipped and stumbled on some pebbles, which brought him to the ground. It was this and not Rey’s superior strength or skill which brought him down.
While this somewhat counters the ‘Mary Su’ effect, it unfortunately still presents Luke as a Jedi who is no longer master of his environment, no longer fleet and steady of foot, no longer a great Jedi warrior.
STAR WARS 9 LEAKS: ‘SIX KNIGHTS OF REN ACTORS CAST FOR THIS SCENE‘
Did Disney listen to the fans? Is this some small attempt to clarify that Rey is not some ridiculously unrealistically perfect ‘Mary Sue’ who is good at everything without trying and because it suits the plot?
Either way, it’s unlikely to do much to re-engage and win back a startling large part of a previously unwavering fandom.
They have (rightly) had major issues with Jar-Jar Binks, Midichlorians, toddler Anakin’s wooden acting and teenage Anakin’s melodrama… but they never turned away from their beloved franchise.
Has Disney broken the fandom in two and, if so, how can they make it right? Can anything ‘fix’ Star Wars?
