Superman: Is this the TRUTH behind Henry Cavill 'quit' reports? Is he leaving or not?
But after Cavill, his agent, and Warner Bros appeared to drop various hints that the claims weren’t fully accurate, there’s now further evidence that this has all been a fuss over nothing.
The Hollywood Reporter broke the story on Wednesday that Cavill was “out” as the iconic superhero, as focus shifted to Supergirl instead.
It was claimed that money was at the centre of the furore, and that a cameo in the upcoming Shazam! movie fell through.
However, Cavill took to Instagram yesterday with a cryptic video of himself enjoying holding a Superman action figure, kickstarting talk that he hadn’t parted ways with the studio after all.
Today, TMZ claim to have heard from sources that no discussions whatsoever – positive or negative – have taken place about Cavill’s future in the part, because there are currently no movies involving him in the pipeline.
The US gossip site alleges that “it’s true” Cavill feels he has been underpaid for his recent work, and that others reckon his performances haven’t been as good as they should have been.
But as for long-term decisions on his future, they will seemingly not take place until concrete plans for a new movie involving Superman are in place.
For now, no such plans exist.
The actor’s agent Dany Garcia tweeted in the wake of THR’s initial report: “Be peaceful, the cape is still in his closet.
“@wbpictures has been and continues to be our partners as they evolve the DC Universe. Anticipate a WB statement later today.”
Warner Bros then released this statement: “While no decisions have been made regarding any upcoming Superman films, we’ve always had great respect for and a great relationship with Henry Cavill, and that remains unchanged.”
Following the disappointing performance at the box office and with critics of 2017’s Justice League, it remains to be seen what the studio’s plans for the hero’s future are.
For now, focus is on the upcoming Aquaman solo movie, as well as Shazam! and the Wonder Woman sequel.
The Flash movie is also thought to be heading into production early next year, although Ray Fisher recently said he doesn’t know if a Cyborg movie is still in the works.
As for Batman, Ben Affleck’s future in the part continues to be unclear – he has dropped out of directing the film, and rumours that he will step down from acting as well have been persistent for some time now.
The script for the film, however – titled simply The Batman – is said to be ‘done’.
