The Voice UK winner ‘DROPPED by record label’ after one album: ‘He worked hard’
Jamil’s undeniable talent saw him become the first winner of the talent contest since its move to ITV.
Mentored by Jennifer Hudson, he won legions of supporters and went on to spend a year working hard on his debut album, Evolve.
It became the third highest-charting album by a The Voice UK winner ever, and only the third winner’s album to make it to the Top 40 at all.
But No36 wasn’t high enough to keep bosses at Polydor happy – and it seems they have opted to part ways with him.
Andrea Begley, who released her record The Message in late 2013, is the only winner of The Voice to score a Top 10 album, after charting at No7. Stevie McCrorie’s Big World made No35 in 2016.
“[Jamil] worked hard on his first album but it really didn’t impress fans or get much of a pick-up,” a source told The Sun.
“[Record label] Polydor’s only option was to cut ties with Mo.
“He’s now hoping he’ll be able to make it big on his own.”
He still outperformed predecessors such as Leanne Mitchell (No134), Jermain Jackman (No42) and Kevin Simm (No114).
The only other graduate from the show to have a successful album is season one finalist Bo Bruce, whose record Before I Sleep made it to No10 in the spring of 2013.
Mo’s winner’s single, Unsteady, had peaked at No78 in the charts after his victory in April 2017.
The latest series of The Voice was won by Ruti in April of this year – her cover of The Cranberries’ Dreams made it to No14 in the singles listings.
The Voice Kids crowned its second winner over the weekend, in Daniel Davies – however the winners of that show win a £30,000 contribution towards their music education, rather than a record deal.
Davies’ win marked the second consecutive win for mentor Pixie Lott, who had previously taken Jess Folley all the way back in 2017.
