The Wife: Glenn Close on ‘unexpected’ sex scene at the START of new movie
The actress is collecting Oscars buzz for her role in The Wife, in which she stars opposite Jonathan Pryce.
In an interview with Scotland’s The Herald, she was asked how she first felt upon seeing the script begins with a sex scene between the two of them.
“I thought it was fabulous,” she said.
“It was one of the reasons I loved the script. I thought it was witty and unexpected and… Why not?
“You don’t stop feeling sexy, I don’t think.”
The Wife has had positive reviews, with Close’s performance hailed by many as one of the best of her entire career – a career peppered with standout turns.
It sees her playing Joan Castleman, who begins to question her life choices when she travels to Stockholm with her husband (played by Pryce) as he collects the Nobel Prize in Literature.
“Yeah, it’s meaty,” she said in the same interview.
“It was a good script to read. But I had a lot of questions about it. I wasn’t totally convinced myself.
“I had to answer the question why she doesn’t leave him?
“I was so sure all the women would jump up and say: ‘Oh, just leave him.’ That’s because they are not my mother’s generation.”
The Wife currently holds an 86% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and Close is one of the most-discussed contenders for next year’s Best Actress prizes.
Her perceived competition at this stage could include A Star Is Born’s Lady Gaga, and the stars of The Favourite: Olivia Colman, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz.
Also in the cast of this drama are Christian Slater, Max Irons, Elizabeth McGovern and Alix Wilton Regan.
Close’s own daughter Annie Starke is also on the on-screen team.
The Wife is out in the UK on September 28.
