Freakishly hot weather could hold out through September and possibly into October, according to some long-range forecasters.

A plume of warm, sultry air will sweep into Britain during the middle of next week just as the nation starts to cool down.

Temperatures could reach their highest so far this summer with the 38.5C (101.3F) record still under threat, experts say.

Only Scotland and parts of northern England will escape the sweltering steam-bath although it will be warmer than average across much of the UK.

James Madden, forecaster for Exacta Weather, warned Britain could be facing another lengthy heatwave.

He said: “Our models show we are about to go into another period of prolonged summery weather, there is a growing likelihood we could see another extreme heat surge during the second half of this month.

“It is not out of the question that Britain will bask in some of the highest temperatures of summer to date, even beating those seen over the past two months.

“There is every chance this summer will come in as the hottest on record as temperatures rise back into the mid 30Cs at the very least.

“Longer-range projections show the possibility of warm weather continuing into the start of the meteorological autumn and even into October.”

Britons have been urged to make the most of a brief cooler spell which will bring a drop in temperatures over the next couple of days.

Torrential rain will hammer swathes of the country as a cold front moves in from the Atlantic on Wednesday night.

Northern Britain will be first in the firing line before downpours pelt the south and southeast on Thursday morning.

The rain will clear through the day making way for much fresher air to bring temperatures down widely, the Met Office said.

Meteorologist Bonnie Diamond said: “Quite an active front will move over Wales and northern England on Wednesday evening bringing some heavy rain.

“This will move into the southeast of the country through Thursday morning and it will be a much fresher day with maximum temperatures of around 21C (69.8F).

“Friday is looking more unsettled in the north again with a drier, nicer day forecast elsewhere although it will still feel fresher compared to the start of the week.”

Rain will continue to pelt Scotland and northwestern England over the weekend with sunshine confined to the south, she said.

South-eastern England will hold on to the fine weather into next week as temperatures start to head upwards, she added.

She said: “From the middle of next week onwards there will be a good deal of dry, bright weather in the southeast as a result this part of the country will be back to warm or very warm temperatures.

“It is also going to be humid as tropical air moves into southern Britain, later next week we are expecting temperatures in the high 20Cs.

“The longer-range outlook shows there is a possibility of the warm or very warm weather lasting in the southeast, it will be more unsettled in northern parts of the country.”

Warm weather will hold out at least until the end of the month meaning Britons will enjoy another bank holiday scorcher.

A brief blip towards the end of the month will give way to skyrocketing temperatures in time for the holiday, according to forecasters.

WeatherAction’s Piers Corbyn said: “It is likely to start turning warmer again next Tuesday with parts of the country facing some very high temperatures.

“Towards the end of the week and through next weekend there is a risk most parts of Britain could turn wet and windy, northern and central regions will probably see the worst of this.

“However by the end of August we are looking at another period of very fine and dry weather, apart from Scotland it could become very hot again.

“There is the risk heatwave conditions could build once again.”

Bookmaker Ladbrokes makes it odds on that any part of the UK sees temperatures hit 30C (86F) over the bank holiday.

As forecasters warn the mercury is about to rise it is offering 9-4 from 5-2 on seeing 30C (86F) this week.

Spokesman Alex Apati said: “Summer’s far from over as far as the odds confirmed; it looks as though the sun will stay out for one more Bank Holiday weekend.”

UK weather charts show warm air from the south sweeping into Britain towards the middle of next week.

Temperatures across southern England will widely rise into the 20Cs although it will be cooler further north.

The Met Office’s long-range outlook predicts warm weather to continue into the middle of September.

It states: “It will feel increasingly warm and humid across England and Wales [next week].

“It may be very warm where there is prolonged sunshine.

“There will probably be a good deal of dry and bright weather in the south and east over the coming days, with only brief interludes of thicker cloud and rain.

“As a result, this part of the country may well stay very warm and humid; this pattern is quite likely to continue into the following week, with warm dry weather predominating, especially in the south.

“High pressure will tend to dominate [during the first two weeks of September] with southern areas probably seeing the driest and brightest weather.

“Temperatures by day are likely to be generally warmer than average, but there will an increasing chance of chillier nights.”
