Why Princess Diana had a secret second wedding dress that no one ever saw
Princess Diana’s wedding dress was made by the Emanuels, and was enormous.
The dress was highly inspired by 80s fashion, with a full skirt and enormous leg of mutton style sleeves.
The ivory dress had an elaborate ruffle all around the neckline and shoulders.
The train was a huge 25-foot long and finished with stunning lace.
The dress was make of ivory silk and taffeta and was finished with a 153-yard tulle veil.
It is estimated that the dress is valued at £151,000.
Decorated with 10,000 pearls the dress also had a 18 karat gold horseshoe stitched in the petticoats for good luck.
But Diana also had a second secret dress that was far less lavish.
According to Fabulous, David Emanuel told PEOPLE: “At the time we wanted to make absolutely sure that the dress was a surprise.”
They created the second the dress as a backup option, incase anything was to go wrong.
What is more, Diana wanted to ensure if the design of her first dress was leaked then she would have another option that had not been seen.
David said: “We didn’t try it on Diana. We never even discussed it.
“We wanted to make sure that we had something there; it was for our own peace of mind, really.”
The second dress was similar in terms of fabric and shape but had no lace.
However, there was little doubt that Diana would wear the showstopper gown on her big day.
Princess Diana had a special trick to stop the paparazzi from snapping pictures of her chest.
According to Anya Hindmarch, Princess Diana created the “cleavage bag”.
The designer often worked with the royal and said the invention made the two giggle.
Harper’s Bazaar report Anya Hindmarch, 50, said: “We used to laugh when we designed what she called her ‘cleavage bags,’ little satin clutches which she would cover her cleavage with when she stepped out of cars.”
