Harley Quinn: Here’s when Margot Robbie will RETURN as Suicide Squad favourite

Today, news is abound that Kaley Cuoco will voice the iconic character in a new DC TV series, but what of the big screen?

Robbie played Harley in Suicide Squad and, despite the film receiving generally poor reviews, she went down well with fans and critics alike.

Birds of Prey is currently in the works at DC – and while it’s not a Harley Quinn solo movie, it will see her assembling her own all-female team

The release date has been set, and it’s February 7, 2020.

That date may be a long way off yet, but we already know it’ll be landing in cinemas just one week before the next James Bond caper, which was recently pushed back to February 14 the same year.

The cast is being assembled at present, with Jurnee Smollett-Bell cast as Black Canary and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress.

Rosie Perez is also thought to have signed up to play Renee Montoya, a gay Gotham City police detective who becomes known as a hero named The Question.

Earlier this year, Robbie told Collider: “I pitched the idea of an R-rated girl gang film including Harley, because I was like, ‘Harley needs friends.’

“Harley loves interacting with people, so don’t ever make her do a standalone film. She’s got to be with other people, it should be a girl gang.

“I wasn’t seeing enough girl gangs on screen, especially in the action space. So that was always a big part of it.”

She added: ““And then of course having a female director to tell that story. And giving a female director the chance to do big budget stuff.

“They always get ‘Here’s the tiny little film’… I was like, ‘I love action. I love action films. I’m a girl. What, are we meant to only like a specific thing?’

“So it was a hugely important to find a female director for this, if possible. But at the end of the day — male, female — the best director gets the job and Cathy [Yan] was the best director.”

Suicide Squad’s sequel continues to be “delayed”, and it’s unclear if or when it will get officially put into motion.

Other DC projects in the pipeline include Aquaman, due this December; and Shazam! and Wonder Woman 1984, both out in 2019.

Birds of Prey is out on February 7, 2020.
