Twitter users were up in arms when a couple with two young children, who didn’t realise they were over spending on their shopping bill to the tune of £100, enlisted the help of the savings show.

The ITV show promoted “super cheap” foods, instead of branded items, but chose to feature an “everyday family” that seemed to have no problem splashing out on food.

Amy and Manoj, who had two young children, thought they were spending £70 a week on food.

However, in reality they were spending £170. They couple didn’t even notice £100 extra pounds a week was being spent and was unaccounted for.

“People who don’t realise they’re spending £170 per week on food don’t need to go on a show about saving money,” one Twitter user wrote.

Another said: “That is ‘NOT’ a poor family, a stupid one perhaps?”

“How do they not know they are spending over £170 a week on food, more money than sense #SaveMoneyGoodFood,” another said.

The new show aired this evening and starred presenter Susanna Reid and chef Matt Tebbutt.

The programme aims to show families how to eat more cheaply.

It advised buying whole vegetables, instead of pre-prepared ones, and staying away from branded items.

The family on the show had a bin full of going-off vegetables and were not even aware what was in their cupboards and fridge.

“Most TV producers are London centric middle class folk, presenters are the same but richer. They don’t know poor people,: one Twitter user said.

Another wrote: “My god it really gets on my nerves when these saving money programmes, use high end income families.”

Other views thought that they noticed the show was very similar to a competitor’s programme.

“@ITV save money:good food is eerily similar to (exactly the same as) @BBC eat well for less,” one wrote.

In other news, Express.co.uk recently revealed that a number of British favourite foods will become more expensive after Prime Minister Theresa May triggers Article 50 and Britain leaves the EU.

Financial analysts and experts have listed a wide range of foods that will make supermarket shops pricier after Britain leaves the EU.
