Yes, Thanos has demanded our silence.

However, the Mad Titan seems to be on a break right now.

If you don’t know what that means, you haven’t seen Infinity War and should probably stop reading now.

If you do, you are probably still wondering why on Earth Doctor Strange did what he did and what his final two cryptic comments mean.

LAST WARNING: HUGE SPOILERS AHEAD

Fans are busy doling out the blame right now for everything that went wrong, like, you know, the loss of half of all life in the universe.

Star-Lord’s temper tantrum at the end woke Thanos up just as the others were actually removing the Infinity Gauntlet. Thor “should have gone for the head” instead of the chest because his ego needed a moment to gloat. Some fans even blame Jane Foster for unearthing the Power Stone.

All of these were accidental, though.

Only one character knew exactly what he was doing. Why did the clinical, merciless and unbending Doctor Strange surrender the Time Stone? Thanos had no magic of his own without Ebony Maw to force the sorcerer to reveal or release it…

In one scene Strange clearly told Tony Stark: “If it comes to you, or the boy (Peter Parker), and the Time Stone, I will not hesitate to choose the Stone.”

Yet he traded the gem to Thanos in return for Tony’s life.

Just before he was killed in The Snap, Strange tells the horrified and confused Stark: “We are in the endgame now,” and then “Tony, There was no other way.”

What does he mean?

Earlier on Titan, the Sorcerer Supreme had travelled to future timelines.

Dr. Stephen Strange: “I went forward in time… to view alternate futures. To see all the possible outcomes of the coming conflict.”

Peter Quill: “How many did you see?”

Dr. Stephen Strange: “Fourteen million, six hundred and five.”

Tony Stark: “How many did we win?”

Dr. Stephen Strange: “…One.”

Strange has seen the only way to defeat Thanos. Clearly, everything had to unfold the devastating way it did.

Thanos needed the Time Stone to reverse the moment Scarley Witch kills Vision and destroys the Mind Stone. Thanos had to carry out The Snap.

Remember their earlier confrontation? Thanos: “The hardest choices require the strongest will.”

Dr. Stephen Strange: “You will find our will equal to your own!”

Strange didn’t capitulate or even particularly care about Stark. He made the hardest choice with the strongest will. He did what he had seen was necessary to allow the one chance of salvation in the future.

Now all we need is a handy shiny gem of our own to figure out what the Thanos he saw…
