Avengers Infinity War writers almost saved Thanos’ Snap for Avengers 4 – Here’s why

WARNING SPOILERS FOR AVENGERS INFINITY WAR AHEAD

It was the most shocking moment of the Marvel epic.

Thanos gathered all six Infinity stones in his Infinity gauntlet and snapped his fingers.

The result of the Snap seeing half the universe turn to ash and Thanos able to smile satisfied as the sun rose.

However Avengers Infinity War writers Markus and McFeely have revealed this moment was almost saved for the opening of Avengers 4.

Speaking with the New York Times, Markus revealed: “But what we realised is, it would feel more like a cliffhanger than we intended.

“[If the Snap had been saved for Avengers 4] it would be a continuation of exactly what you were watching before.”

“[When, as the culmination of 10 years of Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, it should] “be as big as it wants to be, and as sprawling.”

He added: “[Instead, we aimed Avengers Infinity War to be a movie] “that went all the way to a tragic ending.

“[Before being followed by Avengers 4] where mysterious things happen that I can’t tell you about.”

McFeely added: “[Since Part 1 ended with the Snap] “it’s really, I think, difficult to predict where we go next” [in Part 2].

The screenwriters have also revealed why they kept Ant-Man for Avengers 4.

“We thought, ‘do you want to give any hope?’” McFeely said. “It’s a tragedy and tragedies end in a grim and sad end.”

Markus added: “When you end it like that, there aren’t too many other places you can go [for a tag scene].

“Marvel tags often point to the next movie coming. The next movie is Ant-Man and the Wasp, which is light-hearted – you don’t wanna go, ‘but meanwhile! Paul Rudd is still adorable!’”

Avengers 4 will be released in UK cinemas on April 26, 2019.
