Which? conducted a study to find the supermarket with the cheapest online shopping basket and the results have just been revealed. Looking at Morrisons, Asda, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Ocado and Waitrose, the best shop that’ll provide you the cheapest bill might be surprising to some shoppers. Using the cost of 77 popular branded products across the year, including items such as Andrew toilet roll, Cathedral City cheddar cheese, Hovis bread, and PG Tips tea bags, the comparison site looked at which supermarket had the cheapest prices. Here are the results:

With the lowest cost basket at £156.46, Morrisons was found to be the cheapest online supermarket.

The same basket of items cost on average £170.79 at Waitrose – making it the most expensive online supermarket in the analysis.

The full list of results, in order of price are listed below:

Supermarket       Baket Price

Morrisons              £156.46

Asda                     £157.99

Sainsbury’s           £158.55

Tesco                    £161.49

Ocado                   £169.86

Waitrose               £170.79

Sainsbury’s           £158.55

Tesco                    £161.49

Ocado                   £169.86

Waitrose               £170.79

Asda just missed out on the cheapest spot, with an average basket costing £1.53 more than Morrisons, at £157.99.

As well as having the cheapest average cost of a basket, Morrisons was also the cheapest basket for six months of the year in 2018.

Waitrose and Ocado were the most expensive places to buy the same basket of groceries for six months of the year each.

And that’s not the only reason to consider buying your weekly shop at Morrisons.

They also scored a customer rating of 72 per cent for for quality, range, and value for money.

Harry Rose, Editor of Which? magazine, said: “Many of us will be looking to save money following the festive season, so shoppers will be pleased to know that they don’t have to pay over the odds for their favourite brands.

“All they need to do is shop smarter.

“To save even more on your online shop, you could consider substituting branded items for own-label products, and if your supermarket has a price promise, hold them to it. If your basket would cost less elsewhere, they should refund you the difference.”

Whilst Aldi and Lidl are firm favourites to shop these days, the stores were unable to be included in the comparison as they do not have an online counterpart.
