Deadpool 2 introduced us to Yukio, a character with rumours already flying around her.

Fox has a book of 400 or so Marvel characters to pick from, and Wernick told CBR.com: “Yukio jumped out at us as just a character we would love to see further explored.”

Who plays Yukio in Deadpool 2?

The adult-assassin character was aged down for Deadpool 2 and was played by Japanese-Australian actress Shiori (sometimes spelt Shioli) Kutsuna.

Wernick called Kutsuna amazing, adding: “I really think we have to do her more justice going forward — not as though we did her injustice, she just didn’t have a lot of screen time.”

“I’d love to explore the Yukio character more,” he said.

Why is Yukio important to the Marvel universe?

Yukio’s Deadpool 2 debut was also groundbreaking for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and a big step forward for LGBTQ+ representation.

Yukio is not only an assassin with purple hair but also Negasonic Teenage Warhead’s girlfriend.

This character pairing made Yukio and Negasonic (played by Brianna Hildebrand) the first openly gay characters, and relationship, in the MCU.

Deadpool 2 could pull a classic Wade Wilson move by making cheap jokes at their expense.

Instead, Deadpool becomes buddy-buddy with Yukio in an attempt to further annoy his frenemy, Negasonic.

Deadpool 2 may be the odd one out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it certainly is making strides that other movies can follow in.

Deadpool 2 is a film that breathes cynical humour, and yet it doesn’t mock the addition of a lesbian couple into its franchise.

The movie doesn’t address it as anything other than natural, and this move is a good start for the superhero genre.
