Right now, a metal fence protects the Eiffel Tower from unscreened passers-by. Now, authorities have revealed plans to replace the unsightly fence with a new, bullet-proof glass wall, according to a report in the Local

“The terror threat remains high in Paris and the most vulnerable sites, led by the Eiffel Tower, must be the object of special security measures,” deputy mayor Jean-Francois Martins, who is in charge of tourism at the Paris City Hall, tells the Local.

Paris has long dealt with the threat of attack at its many famous attractions and, most recently, a man wielding a machete was apprehended at the Louvre.

Martins tells the Local that “the city would replace the metal grills on the northern and southern sides with glass panels, which will allow Parisians and visitors to enjoy “a very pleasant view” of the monument from the Champs de Mars and the Pont d’Iena,” writes Oliver Gee.

The wall will be 2.5 meters high and will be transparent, which will be more aesthetically pleasing for visitors.
