The actor played Danny Zuko in the iconic musical movie; the LA premiere of which took place 40 years ago last night.

Travolta was on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to promote his new film Gotti when talk inevitably turned to the 1978 classic.

Fallon referenced a hip-based move he performs in You’re The One That I Want, which Travolta dubbed the “Four Corners”.

He explained: “Like in Pulp Fiction. I grew up with all these novelty dances.

“In Grease they needed a step for You’re The One That I Want, at the end, and I said, ‘well we used to do the Four Corners – why don’t we do that?’

“The choreographer said, ‘well show it to me’, and I did.”

Within moments, Travolta and Fallon were both on their feet recreating the moment, as fans wildly applauded.

Grease ultimately found its way to cinemas on June 16, 1978; making sensations out of John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John; both already successful in their own rights.

It also starred Stockard Channing, who went on to earn more plaudits on stage and screen – including in The West Wing.

A sequel, Grease 2, was released in 1982 to much smaller success – but that movie has gained more of a cult following as the years have gone by.

Didi Conn, who played Frenchie, revealed that a follow-up film was originally supposed to star the key stars of the first one.

“I kid around that if I’d have known [how big Grease would be], I would have had my agent negotiating a bit more,” she told Metro. “We had no idea. In fact, Paramount had no idea.

“Remember the carnival, where the boys are throwing pies at the teachers, and the coach says ‘I’ll see you in summer school’? That was actually preparing for a sequel called Summer School, starring all of us.

“Paramount had been watching the dailies, and our producer brought the concept of a sequel in summer school to the powers that be – and Paramount said ‘nah. This is a sweet little summer movie, it doesn’t warrant a sequel’. They passed.

“And then when it was a big hit, a year later, John and Olivia weren’t available. Then they made Grease 2, which is really its own thing.”
