The Solo origin story stars Alden Ehrenreich as the young version of Harrison Ford’s iconic Han Solo, a charismatic and less-cynical version of the smuggler audiences have loved for decades.

But with all Solo: A Star Wars Story’s upheavals, reshoots, and a press-focused premiere at Cannes, its box office earnings are failing to live up to the hype.

Solo: A Star Wars Story had its American debut over Memorial Day Weekend, the 25 May, the traditional slot for summer blockbusters and the Han Solo movie broke the record for best preview gross on Memorial Day weekend of all time.

This was the first and only record it would break.

Solo: A Star Wars Story may be suffering from an oversaturated market.

It is the second Star Wars movie in 6 months, and the fourth in less than two and a half years and though die-hard fans may not be experiencing Star Wars fatigue, a wider audience might.

The gross box office takings for Solo: A Star Wars Story came in at £26.7 million ($35.6 million) on Friday, including £10.5m ($14m) in Thursday previews.

Solo: A Star Wars Story has taken £62.5m ($83.3m) from Friday to Sunday, and various sources are projecting £75.8m ($101m) for the Friday to Monday timeframe.

Abroad, Solo took £488m ($65m) in its overseas debut, giving the film a total of £11.2m ($148.3m) for its Friday to Sunday global launch.

There are plenty of factors that go into a movie’s gross takings, and Solo: A Star Wars Story seemed to take them all on.

Directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were fired mid-shooting and replaced by Ron Howard, which resulted in cast swaps and reshoots.

The Han Solo movie’s premiere at Cannes may not have done it a great service either, as commentary began popping up and bursting Solo’s enigmatic bubble.

Solo: A Star Wars Story is also competing alongside mega-blockbusters like Deadpool 2 and the still-strong Avengers: Infinity War.

Despite having the weekend debut to itself, that is some stiff competition.

As Solo: A Star Wars Story continues to rake in reviews, its box office takings may shift to a sharp upward trajectory.

Solo: A Star Wars Story is a different type of Star Wars movie from the trilogies audience’s have come to expect.

Less a story of good vs. evil, it’s a story of the inherently selfish struggle to survive, and given the survival instincts of its eponymous character, you shouldn’t count Solo: A Star Wars Story out yet.
