And 92-year-old Dick Van Dyke can be seen making a triumphant return in the video, dancing on a table in his role as Mr Dawes Jr, the son of the elderly bank director Van Dyke played (along with chimney sweep Bert) in the original film.

Ben Whishaw and Emily Mortimer star as now grown-up Jane and Michael Banks, alongside a host of stars including Meryl Streep, Julie Walters, Colin Firth and Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Blunt, 35, said the time is right for the magical nanny to return 53 years after she first arrived, umbrella in hand.

She said: “The world is fragile right now, and people need a film like this. It’s incredibly hopeful.

“I didn’t watch the original while shooting, but it’s seared into my memory – this idea of her as this incredibly unsentimental character who swept into their lives and made it all right. I found a great comfort in that as a child.”

Set in London in 1934, during the Great Depression, the film sees Mary Poppins swoop in to help the Banks family in the wake of a family tragedy.

The trailer for the magical musical also teases the return of signature scenes, including kite flying and animated sequences.

• Mary Poppins Returns will be released in UK cinemas on December 21 2018.
