Avengers Endgame: Did you spot THIS ‘hidden symbol’ in Avengers 4 trailer? Iron Man clue?

Writing on Reddit, the poster acknowledged that it could just be a coincidence, but there’s a remarkable piece of symbolism in the trailer that could nod towards some widely-held beliefs about what might happen in the film. Robert Downey Jr plays Iron Man in the MCU, and is speculated to be departing the role at the end of Phase Four – which will come with Avengers: Endgame.

The trailer for the ensemble blockbuster opens with the hero, aka Tony Stark, drifting through space, presumably after the disastrous showdown with Thanos on Titan.

He leaves a heartbreaking message for Pepper (Gwyneth Paltrow), in which he reveals that food and water supplies have run out, and oxygen levels will do the same in one day’s time.

There’s a beautiful silhouette shot of the ship floating through space, and Redditor iAMA_Leb_AMA discovered that the shape of the ship and the shadow it creates actually could mean something deeper.

They posted a screengrab of a Google definition of “swallow symbolism”.

It reads: “The swallow tattoo was a symbol used historically by sailors to show off their sailing experience, usually tattooed on the chest, hands or neck.

“Seeing swallows was a sign that their travels were nearing an end.”

The post has been 96% Upvoted by tens of thousands of readers.

So does this imply that Iron Man’s travels – as in his story within the Marvel movies – are coming to an end?

Opinion is divided, with one user pointing out that the swallow symbolism can actually point to a much more uplifting conclusion.

mm3n said: “Very good find. However, I believe it’s not a negative end, but more like the sailors will reach safe shores.

“As in, if you see a bird on a boat, that means there is land nearby so you won’t die forgotten at sea.

“Another line from Wikipedia: ‘Another legend holds that since swallows return to the same location every year to mate and nest, the swallow will guarantee the sailor returns home safely.’”

The Avengers: Endgame trailer broke records upon its release, debuting to an astronomical 289 million views.

“To the greatest fans in the world, thank you for being there from the beginning til the endgame and making Marvel Studios’ #AvengersEndgame the most viewed trailer in history with 289M views in 24 hours!” Marvel Studios posted on Twitter.

That, for comparison, is more than 50 million higher than the Avengers: Infinity War trailer, which launched just over one year earlier.

Avengers: Endgame is out on April 26.
