eBay: Very rare Girl Guiding 50p listed for £825 due to error – but can you spot it?

An eBay user is selling a 50p coin celebrating 100 years of Girl Guides for a staggering £825 on the bidding website.

While many coins this year have been sold on the site for thousands of pounds, this very pricy listing has a high price tag for an entirely different reason.

While the Girl Guide coins are rare, this particular 50p is priced so highly due to an error on the design.

The Girl Guide commemorative coin, which was released in 2010, bears the famous three leaf ‘trefoil’ logo but this eBay addition has a misshapen star within the bottom left leaf.

The coin’s description reads: “An Extremely Rare 50p 2010 coin. 

“UNIQUE Mis-shapen bottem left star and centre dipressed star is a PERFECT star shape in centre small clover – this is not PERFECT on all coins, it is also a sign of authenticity. 

“One of the rarest and most valuable 50p coins in circulation.”

The seller, whose profile name is pumpkinmooncat is based in Boston, Lincolnshire and has 100 per cent positive feedback.

They are accepting offers on the coin, with the option to buy it now also available.

Change Checker describes the Girl Guide 50p as common, with a mintage of 7,410,090.

Released in 2010, the Girl Guiding fifty pence piece features the special design created by Jonathan Evans and Donna Hainan.

The design features the famous three leaf ‘trefoil’ logo, which is the global symbol of Guiding and represents the three-fold promise.

Jonathan Evans, Group Creative Director at Navy Blue told Royal Mint: “The logo of the six trefoils symbolises the various stages that girls go through in Girlguiding UK, from the Rainbow Promise Badge to the Trefoil Guild Promise Badge. 

“It represents the journey but also portrays the strength and diversity of the organisation as a whole. The abstract arrangement of the ‘marques’ gives a real feeling of protection and trust and the six logos linked together appear to hold hands giving a sense of unity.”

From 10p coins to £2s, eBay has seen no shortage of pieces of change being listed on its website in the past. 

While some of these items contain minting errors, for others, it’s not always clear what makes them so “rare”. 

Last week, another 50 pence piece was posted on the website for sale – it was listed for a whopping £560.

Depicting the Beatrix Potter character Peter Rabbit, the commemorative coin was created in celebration of the author and her work and was released in 2017 by the Royal Mint.

The reverse features the character as well as the words: “The tale of Peter Rabbit,” and was designed by Emma Noble.

However, the general public are unlikely to find this particular coin hiding in their loose change, as it is in fact an uncirculated item.

This means that it is of a finer finish than circulating coins, the Royal Mint said.

While is may be a 50 pence piece, this coin was initially available to purchase from the Royal Mint for £10.

However, according to the website, they are no longer available to purchase from this platform.
