Another alien invasion film is scaring up huge success with horror fans. Earlier this year Emily Blunt scored a massive success with A Quiet Place, where the remnants of humanity had to try not to make a sound to escape the monsters. This time, Sandra Bullock is fighting to protect her family as aliens prey on anyone who sees them, in the most horrific way. The survivors must spend almost every moment blindfolded, but what do the aliens actually look like? The truth has been revealed.

Director Susanne Bier said: “The creatures mess with your mind; they tap into your deepest fear.”

But how do you show on screen a monster which is so utterly horrifying it causes anyone who sees it to commit suicide?

Bier told Radio Times: “To be completely honest, every time I see a monster in a movie I kind of go, ‘Is that all?’”

In the end, the filmmakers decided there was only one possible solution.

Biere added: “Because they (the monsters) tap into your deepest fear, we can’t ever see them, because that deepest fear is going to be different whoever you are.

“That has always been the most frightening, and I wanted the whole movie to have that atmosphere.”

So, basically, every person will see something different. The victims never see the actual monster itself, they see the manifestation or illusion of their own deepest darkest fear.

It’s a genius and simple idea, leaving everything to the viewers’ imaginations, although it has also somewhat divided the audience.

The movie is currently the most talked-about release on Netflix (or almost any channel) and has a respectable 67% reviews aggregate on Rotten Tomatoes.

However, many have also felt the central concept leaves the film lacking a strong core, setting up a major scare or revelation it can never deliver.

One commentator summed it up neatly as “A load of BULLOCK.”

The Rotten Tomatoes summary is more positive; “Strong acting and an effectively chilly mood offer intermittently creepy compensation.”

Bird Box is streaming on Netflix now.
