Bird Box on Netflix showed THIS monster but deleted scene too 'SCARY' for Sandra Bullock

Bullock’s powerful central performance in the new horror thriller has been widely praised. However, it turns out that Malorie’s relentless and unflinching determination to protect her children at any cost was not always matched by the actress herself. The star put herself through physical hell filming the gripping movie, even injuring herself while blindfolded, but it was what she couldn’t see that affected her more than anything. Strangely, this is exactly like the central concept of Bird Box itself. Director Susanne Bier revealed that Bullock actually did not want to face the monster which was created for one scene – because she was too scared.

Bier told Bloody Disgusting: “At first, Sandy was like, ‘I don’t want to see it,’ because she thought it was scary.’”

This is a film which shows numerous horrifying suicides as victims are traumatised so much by what they see that they take their own lives.

Bier noted that Netflix never asked her to tone any of it down: “ “I don’t think Netflix have any inhibitions at all. I think we pretty much wanted to do it so it felt real and at the time was harrowing.”

What could possibly be worse to look at than that?

Although Bird Box never reveals the alien monsters on screen, a scene was shot where Malorie does see one of them, and this is the one that Bullock was too scared to see before shooting began. Ultimately it was dropped for a variety of reasons.

Bier has explained the final decision to never show the monsters is based on the fact that every victim sees something different,

She said: “ Whatever those beings are, they tap into your deepest fear. Everybody’s deepest fear is going to be different from the other person. I think to suddenly take upon a concrete shape in order to illustrate that becomes weak. Where the concept is really strong, then trying to illustrate it is kind of almost meaningless. So it would have been the wrong decision.”

However, its also turns out that the monster created for the scene had the opposite effect on the cast than the one intended.

Bullock revealed: “It was a green man with a horrific baby face. It was snake-like, and I was like, ‘I don’t want to see it when it first happens. Just bring it into the room. We’ll shoot the scene.’ I turn and he’s like this [growling at me.] It’s making me laugh. It was just a long fat baby.”

Bier added: “It so easily becomes funny. We actually shot that and spent a lot of energy on, but every time I saw it, I was like, ‘This is not going to be tense. It’s just going to be funny.'”
