Crowds 'flock' to Mary Berry sheep drive
TV chef Mary Berry was spotted by hundreds of tourists leading 20 sheep across London Bridge.
The former Great British Bake Off presenter was chosen by organisers of the annual Great Sheep Drive to kick off the event, which celebrates the Freemen of the City’s right to drive the animals over the bridge.
The ancient tradition sees hundreds of people taking turns herding two groups of 10 sheep back and forth over the River Thames.
It dates back to the 12th century, when traders were allowed to enter the City without paying a toll.
The re-enactment aims to raise thousands of pounds for the Lord Mayor’s Appeal.
Berry, who was herself made a Freeman of the City in 2014, said the event went “like clockwork”.
“They were exceedingly well-behaved,” she said.
“I think they’ve done it before,” she added.
“A lot of people are here who will never have seen sheep other than a roast lamb on a Sunday.”
The drive is part of the annual Wool Fair, which is organised by the Worshipful Company of Woolmen, who hope to throw the spotlight on the British lamb and wool industry.
