Huge backlash against Corbyn over refusal to back Northern Ireland staying in the UK
Mr Paisley furiously attacked Mr Corbyn and said: “He clearly doesn’t care about the United Kingdom.
“If he did he would fight to keep it together.”
Jeremy Corbyn said if he was Prime Minister he would take a neutral position in any border poll when asked how a Labour Government would handle such a campaign.
He said: “It’s within the terms of the Good Friday Agreement that such a poll could be held if there was a willingness to do so, at that point you don’t stand in its way, but it is within the terms of the Good Friday Agreement and I think the UK Government should be neutral in that respect.”
He made the comments during a visit to Northern Ireland.
His statement also led to a vicious swipe from the DUP’s Sammy Wilson who said Jeremy Corbyn was unworthy of a single vote following his visit to Belfast.
He said: “Jeremy Corbyn’s visit confirms what many people already thought about him,” said Mr Wilson.
“His support for the break-up of the United Kingdom and refusal to engage with victims of republican terrorism come as little surprise.
“Neither would his desire to keep Northern Ireland entrapped within the European Union.”
The far Left Labour leader came in for strong criticism on his visit to Belfast for refusing to meet the bereaved families of IRA victims following an invitation by DUP MP Gregory Campbell.
Mr Corbyn denied the “snub” and claimed he was only notified of the invitation earlier in the week when his schedule had already been agreed.
Mr Wilson added: “He has had the opportunity to distance himself from the murderous cause which he gave support to in previous times.
“However he has not even tried to avail himself of the opportunity and in doing so, proven himself unworthy of a vote anywhere in the United Kingdom.”
Mr Corbyn’s spokesman revealed yesterday the Labour leader believes that a majority of people on the island of Ireland favoured unification.
During his interview with BBC Jeremy Corbyn added: “I think there has to be a decision within terms of the Good Friday Agreement, we’re dealing with conjectures here, we’re quite a long way off from any of this.
“We would be ensuring the Good Friday Agreement is carried out to the letter.”
