Aladdin and The Lion King are the next two featured Disney animated films to receive a ‘live action’ treatment from the studios, and both will come with a massive cast next year. Disney’s recent effort to remake films with a new cast and a fresh visual take has been ongoing for years now, as the company makes its way through its most beloved animated films. Most recently, this was showcased in Emma Watson’s Beauty and the Beast, and before in Cinderella. Aladdin has been shrouded in mystery, with only a single teaser trailer released so far, but now more details have cropped up.

Who will be in the Aladdin remake cast?

Aladdin was naturally going to be one of the more difficult films to remake under Disney, due to its beloved cast.

When the first film aired in 1992, the cast of Scott Weigner (Aladdin), Robin Williams (Genie), Linda Larkin (Jasmine) and Jonathan Freeman as Jafar were hugely popular.

Robin Williams made the role his own, and the prospect of him being replaced – especially since the actor died in 2014 – has left many people cautious about the new cast.

The next Aladdin film is scheduled for release on May 24 2019, and details of the new cast have only just surfaced.

What we know so far is Mena Massoud will play Aladdin, Naomi Scott will play Princess Jasmine, and Will Smith will take the role of Genie.

Nefarious villain Jafar will be played by Marwan Kenzari.

The cast seems to be going the way of the last film, with smaller unknown actors for the Aladdin and Jasmine role, and a Hollywood A-lister as Genie.

Title star Mena Massoud is a Canadian actor, born in Cairo to two Egyptian parents.

The up-and-coming actor has had a career rooted mainly in television, with a few film credits.

Most notably, he has starred in Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan alongside John Krasinski.

In 2019 the actor will also have roles in films Run This Town and Strange But True.

Naomi Scott is more well-known, taking on the role of Jasmine with Hollywood experience behind her.

The actress was born in the UK to an Indian mother and British father, and is married to Ipswich Town footballer Jordan Spence.

She has most recently starred in the film adaptation of Power Rangers and 2015 Matt Damon science fiction film The Martian.

Scott will also appear in the newest film adaptation of Charlie’s Angels in 2019.
