Aquaman end credits scene explained: What does mid-credits scene mean for a sequel?

Superhero movies have made the end credits scene something of a trope in recent years. Marvel has done wonders with them, teasing all sorts of upcoming plots and also poking fun at the device itself, too. Warner Bros has been mostly unable to replicate the success of Marvel, but Aquaman hopes to change the tide, much like Wonder Woman did. As fans flock to cinemas, many want to know if they should stick around for an end-credits scene…

Does Aquaman have an end credits scene?

Strictly speaking, the clip is a mid-credits scene and it comes quite early so fans won’t have to wait long.

The first set of credits are animated and once they conclude, another tidbit of Aquaman begins to play.

Back in November, a website called ReRelease leaked the existence of an end credits scene.

The initial rumour was the scene would set up another ensemble DC Comics movie, featuring the Justice League.

But with the movie swimming through cinemas, fans and journalists who have seen the film confirmed it does not feature the justice league.

What does the mid-credits scene mean?

Aquaman’s mid-credits scene most likely means there will be another Aquaman movie.

The scene opens with a shot of Black Manta, a secondary villain in the movie played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.

He is floating in the water on a piece of driftwood, seriously injured during an earlier fight with Aquaman in Sicily (a fight teased in the trailer).

The stranded Black Manta is discovered by a lone fishing boat on the ocean.

Soon it is revealed the boat belongs to Dr Stephen Shin, a character who briefly cameod in the film played by Randall Park.

If you were paying close attention during the film, you’ll remember Dr Shin as an Atlantis truther (someone who believes the city exists despite evidence to the contrary) who shown on a TV screen earlier in the film.

As Manta slowly rouses in Dr Shin’s boat, he looks around to see the makeshift lab and wall dedicated to Aquaman and Atlantis – full of clips, cuttings, and pictures.

Dr Shin is examining Manta’s helmet, which he accidentally fires.

This leads Dr Shin to demand of Manta from where he got the Atlantean technology.

Manta agrees to tell Dr Shin, but on one condition: Shin must help Manta find, and exact revenge on, Aquaman.

Fans have taken this to mean the sequel will feature Dr Shin and Manta as they hunt for Aquaman.

As for another Justice League movie, your guess is as good as ours.

Aquaman is now playing in cinemas.
