In just four months time the highly-anticipated sequel to Avengers Infinity War will hit cinemas. Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel will finally join the Avengers in , but now it looks like she’s going to replace Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man as the superhero team’s leader and franchise figurehead. In a new behind-the-scenes featurette, that has been playing in US cinemas, Marvel boss Kevin Feige teased she’s going to be just that going forward. In the clip, he said: “Now Captain Marvel is about to take the lead, and be at the forefront of the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe.”

According to one attendee Feige said: “Captain Marvel is about to take the lead in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe.”

With Downey Jr’s contract expiring after Avengers Endgame, and no sign of his involvement in July’s Spider-Man Far From Home, it sounds like Captain Marvel will be replacing him as the MCU figurehead and leader of the Avengers.

Certainly, it looks like Tony Stark will be bowing out for good in Avengers Endgame.

Our best theory is that Iron Man will have to die to bring back those who died in the Snap.

Assuming the Avengers will have to go back in time through the Quantum Realm to obtain the Infinity Stones before Thanos, this means a trip to Vormir to obtain the Soul gem.

Now, considering Thanos had to sacrifice Gamora to get the stone – which is presumably where the souls of the dead are housed – the Avengers will have to do the same.

Just how fitting would it be for Tony Stark to ask Steve Rogers – after all the conflict they’ve been through in Civil War – to push him, the one he loves, into the cavern below, sacrificing himself to resurrect those who perished in the Snap?

That would be the perfect end to Iron Man’s character arc, as the franchise’s figurehead takes on a messianic role to save the MCU’s future.

And of course, this would make way for Captain Marvel to head up the MCU going forward.

After all, it’s unlikely that Chris Evans’ Captain America will be sticking around. We’re hoping he’s returned to his own time so he can finally have that dance with Peggy and live the life with her he always wanted.

Avengers Endgame is released in UK cinemas on April 26, 2019.
