Avengers Infinity War: Is THANOS dead? End scene explained – WHERE is he?

They promised us some major deaths. They delivered way more than anyone had dreamed – or dreaded.

Now that audiences worldwide have seen Infinity War, fans have started to analyse those incredible and terrible final scenes.

The directors have already said that nobody had come close to predicting the plot of Avengers 4 before Infinity War screened, but what if everyone was looking at it from the wrong direction? What if the ending is the exact opposite of what it seemed?

The Snap erased half of all life across the universe, but which half?

The final scenes showed Thanos with Gamora inside the Soul Realm (inside the Soul Stone) and then sitting on some magically perfect almost dream-like mountain haven. Or should that be Heaven?

The theory was suggested by Reddit user transmogrify who said: “Is Thanos in the soul realm already, and we don’t know it?

“He’s spent a lot of screen time in an orange place with Gamora and water covering the ground. Maybe the “survivors” are the ones who DID go away, Thanos included, and the ones we saw disappear were really being left behind in the original reality. From within the universe, it might be impossible to tell which side you were on.”

The theory adds: “Plus, it’d be cool if Thanos didn’t ever know whether he’d be affected by his own Snap. It would go a long way towards me believing he actually means what he says and isn’t just an a**hole who likes blowing sh** up…

”I mean, it would be a big twist if Thanos offed himself along with everyone else and he’s not even in Avengers 4.”

This also fits the whole build up to how much Thanos actually loves Gamora and why he would “see” her once he has finally found peace. 

Others fans have agreed and the Russo Brothers vagueness about Thanos’ location feeds into this although Anthony Russo told UProxx: ”Once he (Thanos) puts his armor down in that movie he becomes like a holy warrior and this is his resting place for him.”

The choice of words sounds an awful lot like dying…

Reddit reader BigPapaJava added: “The Soul Realm from the comics is an idyllic place. At the end, after Thanos snaps his fingers, he goes from having a freaking axe imbedded in his chest to being in the soul realm to sitting serenely on the side of a mountain looking off into the horizon with satisfaction, so that fits the description.”

The Russos themselves have been unable to say where exactly Thanos has “retired” in that idyllic final shot of him greeting the sunrise.

Has he found Nirvana, is he actually dead and in his own corner of Heaven?
