Avengers Infinity War SHOCK: Surprise return character was RECAST – Guess who played them?

WARNING SPOILERS FOR AVENGERS INFINITY WAR AHEAD

Having been thought to have died in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger, Marvel fans were shocked to see the Red Skull return.

At the end of Cap’s first outing, the villain appeared to be destroyed by the Tesseract, which housed the Space Stone.

However, as teased in the Avengers Infinity War prelude comic, he was in fact transported into Outer Space.

Seven years later, in Avengers Infinity War, the Red Skull returned as the keeper of the Soul Stone on Vormir – but that wasn’t original star Hugo Weaving playing him.

Don’t be fooled by the makeup and German accent, instead it was The Walking Dead star Ross Marquand.

The actor is known for his incredible celebrity impressions, so it’s not surprising he was cast to replicate Weaving’s Red Skull.

As to why Weaving didn’t reprise his role remains a mystery, although he has previously said he wouldn’t chose to return.

Back in 2012, Weaving said: ““I think the tendency, with those films, would be to probably not bring a villain back.

“They might for The Avengers, but I didn’t think I’d be in Captain America 2 or 3.

“I don’t think Red Skull will be there. And it’s not something I would want to do again. I’m glad I did it.

“I did sign up for a number of pictures and I suppose, contractually, I would be obliged to, if they forced me to, but they wouldn’t want to force someone to do it, if they didn’t want to.”

He added: “I think I’ve done my dash with that sort of film. It was good to do it and try it out, but to be honest, it’s not the sort of film I seek out and really am excited by.

“As an actor, to do all sorts of different films is great. It stretches you in different ways. B

“ut, I increasingly like to go back to what I used to always do, which is to get involved with projects that I really have a personal affiliation with.”
