WARNING: Spoilers ahead for Avengers – Infinity War.

In the Blu-ray commentary for the Marvel blockbuster, Joe and Anthony Russo say Spider-Man’s death at the hands of Thanos and the Infinity Stones was much briefer in the script.

“If I remember correctly, it was [in the script] ‘I don’t feel too good.’ Tony looked down at him. He said, ‘I’m sorry’ and disappeared,” Joe recalled.

The moment comes as multiple characters are seen turning to ash, with Thanos successfully wiping out half of all humanity.

“It wasn’t as drawn out as this,” Anthony remarked.

“At the end of the day, [Downey Jr] kept driving: put more and more emotion into it, and just went up to Tom and said, ‘You don’t want to go because you’re a child. And you’re using your strength as Spider-Man to fight this.’

“And then that was the performance that came out.”

He added: “It was a pretty spectacular performance for a 21-year-old actor.”

Avengers: Infinity War has had its digital release date in the US, with the Blu-ray following suit on August 14 in the US and September 3 in the UK.

British fans can download it on Sky Store from Monday, August 20.

Attention will now be turning to next year’s sequel, Avengers 4 – the full title for which has not yet been announced.

The Russos are currently hard at work piecing the footage together, after filming it back-to-back with the record-breaking Infinity War.

Reshoots are scheduled for this autumn, ahead of the release date in April 2019.

Avengers: Infinity War is out on Blu-ray and DVD on September 3 in the UK.
