BLAZING inferno at CARE HOME in Chingford, London – One woman DEAD
Paramedics treated the woman but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Half of the ground and first floors plus the roof of the three storey block is alight.
Around 70 firefighters and officers are currently dealing with the incident.
A resident who did not wish to be named told Express.co.uk: “The street is lined with emergency vehicles.
“Police officers were knocking on peoples door evacuating them.
“Smoke is still rising from the roof and a high ladder fire engine is directing water onto the building from above.
“The road is closed and fire engines are pumping water to the fire from adjoining streets.”
Before the Brigade arrived 12 people left the block.
Station manager Keith Wilson said: “Firefighters have been working hard to contain the spread of the fire which has destroyed the roof. ‘Crews expect to be here into the day, tackling hot spots.”
The brigade was called at 2.14am.
There are 10 fire engines and an aerial ladder platform from stations including Woodford, Chingford, Walthamstow, Enfield and Leytonston fire stations.
It is not known what the cause of the fire was.
The building has tow supported living services, Connington Court and Connington House.
The Care Quality Commission said the two homes catered for “adults with learning disabilities who may also have autism, complex needs or behaviours that challenge services”.
