Rami Malek is the undisputed star of Bohemian Rhapsody, the movie about Queen’s inimitable frontman. As Freddie Mercury, Malek makes use of a variety of skills, blending seamlessly into the role. Bohemian Rhapsody took a long time to make it to the big screen, and Malek was reportedly not the first man chosen to portray Mercury.

But Rami Malek was certainly the right choice and fans and critics alike have lauded his performance.

Before he was cast as Mercury, and before he won hearts as the star of Mr Robot, Elliot Alderson, Malek had plenty of other roles.

He even had a cameo in hit TV series Gilmore Girls, playing a classmate of Lane Kim (Rory’s best friend, played by Keiko Agena).

As for his bloodsucking days, Malek appeared in none other than the world-popular Twilight series.

Specifically, Rami Malek played a vampire named Benjamin in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2.

According to the Twilight Saga Wiki, “Benjamin is a member of the Egyptian coven, created by its leader, Amun.

“His unique special talent enables him to physically influence the alchemical elements of nature: fire, water, earth, and air.

“Amun chose to create him, knowing that Benjamin would be extremely gifted.

“His mate, Tia, is another member of the Egyptian coven.”

Malek was not alone in being a talented actor who cameoed in the vampire series.

He shares the honour with Anna Kendrick, Michael Sheen, Dakota Fanning, and Lee Pace amongst others.

But the vampire wasn’t even Malek’s first film role, which was in 2006.

He played Pharaoh Ahkmenrah in at the Museum, going on to reprise the in the two following sequels Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian (2009) and Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb (2014).

Malek starred alongside Brie Larson in an indie film Short Term 12, and also appeared in two Spike Lee films.

But Malek’s star status was truly captured in the role of mentally unstable hacker genius, Elliot Anderson.

Now that status has been solidified through his portrayal of the legendary Freddie Mercury.

Richard Brody of The New Yorker was one of many critics who priased Malek’s performance.

Brody wrote: “Malek does an impressive job of re-creating Mercury’s moves onstage, but the core of the performance is Malek’s intensely thoughtful, insight-rich channelling of Mercury’s hurt, his alienation and isolation even at the height of his fame.”

Though the movie only holds an aggregated score of 62 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, critics imply that Malek’s performance makes it worth seeing.

Bohemian Rhapsody is out in cinemas now.
