Captain Marvel: Why is Captain Marvel set in the 1990s?

Leave it to Marvel head Kevin Feige to provide fans with the answers they crave, while still remaining elusive on substantial detail.

When the Toronto Sun asked Feige about the reason behind Captain Marvel’s “period” setting (if one can consider the 1990s period), he was characteristically vague.

Feige said: “The answer is, you’ll see in the storytelling of the movie.

“But it allows us to play in an area that we have never played in before.

“And tapping into a 90s action genre was fun for us and being able to see an earlier part of the MCU before Nick Fury knew anything about aliens or anything about super-powered people and also tapping into the Kree-Skrull War, which in the comics was a huge part of the comic mythology, seemed like a fun thing to try and a fun way to give Carol Danvers her own standalone origin story.”

An answer without an answer is exactly what fans have come to expect from Marvel’s decision makers, and it certainly continues to stoke anticipation for upcoming movies.

Captain Marvel’s producer Nate Moore added: “I think the way the film opens is much different than an origin movie.

“And because she is a heroine that you haven’t seen before, we’re able to tell this story structurally in a way that will feel unexpected and hopefully will keep audiences off balance.

“Still balanced enough that they can enjoy the film, but even just making it a period film is sort of interesting in that it’s not just a function of the world as we know it in the MCU today.”

Every other Marvel movie (aside from the opening to Black Panther and Captain America: The First Avengers) has been set in present day, but the jump back to the 90s will give Captain Marvel enough breathing room to feel like a fully standalone flick, instead of a plot device for the larger Avengers 4 narrative.

There are still no teasers for the upcoming Captain Marvel movie.

This lack of trailers, teaser or otherwise, came as a surprise to fans since Captain Marvel has recently wrapped.

With no more set-photos to leak or Instagram posts from stars, fans will have to dig a bit deeper for fuel for their theories.

The immeasurably strong superhero made her debut in the 1960s Marvel comic books.

The story of Captain Marvel, aka Carol Susan Jane Danvers, began as an officer in the United States Air Force in the 1960s.

Danvers worked alongside a Kree alien ally named Mar-Vell.

The Kree are blue aliens whose technologic and scientific prowess are far superior to humans’.

During an explosion, Mar-Vell chose to protect his human co-officer and as a result, his DNA fused with her own.

With this infusion of Kree DNA, Carol Danvers gained superhuman powers and thus Captain Marvel was born.
